Peru’s President Announces Project for Popular Consultation on Constitution Change

The president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, announced that he will send a bill to Congress for the regional and municipal elections to be held in October 2022. The speech took place this Friday (22), at the IV Council of Decentralized Ministers, the which Castillo presided.

In the activity held in the city of Cusco, the Peruvian president highlighted that the initiative seeks to hold a referendum on votes to determine whether or not the country agrees with a new Constitution.

“I must announce that we are going to send a bill to the Congress of the Republic, following the constitutional course, so that in the next municipal and regional elections the Congress will approve this bill so that the Peruvian people can be consulted if they agree with a new Constitution”, said the head of state at the ceremony.

Likewise, Castillo warned that, while it is true that Congress has the power “in its hands”, its government will send the proposal that they will start working immediately.

According to the newspaper “El Comercio”, the National Electoral Jury (JNE) stated that any summons aimed at reforming the Constitution must be previously approved by an absolute majority in Congress and cannot be carried out directly.
