Peru’s highest constitutional court on Thursday approved a legal appeal that allows former President Alberto Fujimori, who is serving a prison sentence for violations of rights, to be released, according to information from a source close to the Cut.
Local news agency RPP first reported the news on Thursday.
Fujimori, 83, is serving a 25-year prison sentence for corruption and human rights crimes during his presidency between 1990 and 2000.
The former president is a divisive figure and is credited with strengthening Peru’s economy, but his government was marred by allegations of abuse of rights and corruption scandals that eventually led to his resignation.
In October of last year, Fujimori received treatment in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a hospital in Lima, after allegedly undergoing surgery for coronary obstruction.
