Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said on Thursday (8) that former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo called him on Wednesday (7) to say he was going to the Mexican embassy in the Peruvian capital , Lima, to apply for asylum.
Castillo never made it to the embassy, however, Lopez Obrador said. Peruvian lawmakers ousted Castillo from power on Wednesday after he tried to dissolve Congress. The former president was arrested and charged with crimes of rebellion and conspiracy for violating the constitutional order.
“He told me he was on his way to the embassy, but surely they had already tapped his phone,” López Obrador said at a morning press conference, adding that he had asked Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard to open the doors of the embassy to the then Peruvian president.
Shortly after Castillo was ousted, López Obrador, in a tweet, hoped that democratic stability would benefit Peruvians, while criticizing Castillo’s treatment by “political and economic elites”.
After the failed attempt at a coup d’état, the Peruvian Congress approved the impeachment of the former president of Peru, who was also detained by the National Police.
According to sources from CNN , this occurred in the city hall of Lima. The National Police of Peru even published a photo of the former president with police in a room, but deleted the publication.
