The pet products, services and trade sector recorded a 27% increase in revenue in 2021 compared to 2020, to R$ 51.7 billion, according to a survey by the Pet Brasil Institute released this Monday (14).
The growth was driven by the pet food segment, which represented R$ 28 billion, or about 55% of the total.
The entity points out that the gains were also driven by the sale of pets directly by breeders, which moved BRL 5.6 billion (11% of revenue, up 14.9% compared to 2020); veterinary products (R$ 5.3 billion, 10.2% of market revenue, up 11%); general services (R$ 4.8 billion, 9.2% of the market and 15.6% growth); veterinary services (R$ 4.7 billion, 9.3% of the market and 14.3% of growth) and hygiene and animal welfare products, pet care (R$ 2.8 billion, 5.4% of the market and 19.5% growth).
The survey also pointed out that small and medium pet shops continue to be the main channel of access to products, representing practically half of all sales in the sector (48%); followed by veterinary clinics and hospitals (18%); agrostores (9.8%); food retail (8.6%); large pet shops (8%); e-commerce (5.4%); and others such as service clubs, convenience stores, among others (2.1%).
