Petrobras board approves ‘megadividend’ that exceeds R$ 78 billion, say sources

The Board of Directors of Petrobras approved this Thursday morning (28) the payment of a ‘megadividend’ to shareholders that should exceed R$ 78 billion, according to high-level sources heard by the CNN .

The meeting ended in the early afternoon, and the statement should be released after the market closes.

The amount approved, according to people who participated in the negotiation, exceeds US$ 15 billion. At this Thursday’s quotation, with the dollar at R$ 5.215, the amount would exceed R$ 78 billion. For the Union, around 37% of this amount remains, which is equivalent to more than R$ 28 billion.

The money helps — and a lot — in the accounts of the Ministry of Economy. The Secretary of the Treasury, Esteves Colnago, had made a request to state companies to advance dividends to cover the hole left in the coffer by the approval of financial aid and discounts on fuel taxes.

This Friday (29), the president of the state-owned company, Caio Mário Paes de Andrade should comment on the company’s results at a virtual press conference.

This will be the executive’s first public appearance after taking charge of the company. In the meantime, his administration has been marked by silence and the reduction in fuel prices.
