The president of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates, had meetings with executives from other major oil companies at the CERAWeek conference, in Houston, to evaluate potential future partnerships, the company said in a statement this Wednesday (8).
According to Petrobras, the meetings with executives from BP, Petronas, TotalEnergies and Equinor “aim at future cooperation for an energetic transition and implementation of new technologies in the oil and gas sector”.
Prates, a former senator appointed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to lead the state-owned company, took office in January with the expectation of leading a strategic shift towards more renewable energy projects.
The executive previously said that the company needs to be prepared for the “inevitable” energy transition and that it will play a leading role in this scenario.
Earlier this week, the Brazilian company announced an agreement with Norwegian Equinor to assess the development of seven offshore wind projects in Brazil, which could cost US$70 billion, according to preliminary calculations, but which still depend on study conclusions and confirmations.
In conversations with BP’s chief executive, Bernard Looney, Petrobras said in a note on its website that the two companies — which are partners in five oil blocks in Brazil — signaled their intention to establish future partnerships and exchange experiences.
“We are going to proceed with mutual visits to deepen discussions both in the area of exploration and production and energy transition,” said Prates, adding that he raised the topic of possible partnerships in bioenergy and hydrogen production.
The president of Petrobras also suggested the participation of both BP and other major oil companies in carbon capture initiatives in the Amazon and mangrove regions.
In the note, Petrobras also said that the Malaysian Petronas showed interest in the production of renewable diesel by the Brazilian competitor, while highlighting similarities between the countries, both with large populations, and the potential synergies between the companies.
The energy transition was also at the heart of Prates’ conversations with TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne and Equinor CEO Anders Opedal, the company added.
