Petrobras privatization itself is not a silver bullet, says Sachsida

Despite admitting a position in favor of privatization of Petrobras, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Adolfo Sachsida, said that the sale of the state-owned company is not a “silver bullet” for improvements at Petrobras in relation to the pressures that the company has suffered in recent months. .

“On privatization (Petrobras): I think privatization itself is not a silver bullet. The important thing for the consumer is to generate competition. When it generates competition, the gains for the consumer are very large”, said the minister this Tuesday (28) when asked about the subject in a public hearing at the Consumer Protection Commission of the Chamber of Deputies.

Sachsida also reinforced that his position, in favor of privatization of Petrobras, does not represent the government’s decision.

“The decision, the solution to privatize or not a company is a decision of the President of the Republic, who did not make that decision, together with the National Congress. And that decision was not made. It’s not a decision of a bureaucrat like me. This discussion has not yet started and there is nothing in Congress suggesting such a discussion at the moment,” he noted.

In the same vein, he reinforced that a possible change in the Import Parity Price (PPI) policy could not be made by the Executive. “The MME has no chance of changing the PPI. I, the minister of mines and energy, and President Bolsonaro have no legal prerogative to change the PPI. The PPI is a decision solely and exclusively by Petrobras”.

The minister was also opposed to other solutions mentioned by the deputies, such as the renationalization of refineries and the taxation of oil exports.

Asked about the government’s actions so that the reduction of taxes on fuels is felt in the consumer’s pocket more quickly, Sachsida highlighted a conversation held with the National Petroleum Agency (ANP) and with Brazilian distributors to enable the use of a modality of consignment in the purchase of fuel.

He also commented on the change in command of Petrobras. “I chose a person who was successful in a market that I consider the most difficult in the world today: the IT market, information technology. […] I believe that his footprint [Caio Paes de Andrade] information technology, management, competition, will do Petrobras a lot of good”.
