Petrobras seeks investors for the GasLub Hub in Itaboraí, Rio de Janeiro

Petrobras opened a market consultation to attract investors interested in acquiring the company’s land in Itaboraí, in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro.

The offer takes place at the GasLub Pole, the new name of the redesigned Petrochemical Complex of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Comperj).

From the area of about 3km² of land, the company is willing to negotiate up to 2.1 km².

The hub houses the Natural Gas Processing Unit (UPGN), which will receive gas from the pre-salt polygon of the Santos Basin, through a gas pipeline of about 355 kilometers, the Route 3.

However, the company announced on the 12th that the work was unilaterally halted by the consortium responsible for the construction.

The structure, which would originally be ready in 2020, was scheduled to open in the second half of this year. Now, the market projects that the operation will start in March 2023.

The UPGN, according to Petrobras, will be able to process up to 21 million cubic meters of natural gas per day, which would supply domestic demand for the product by 2027, according to projections by the federal state-owned Empresa de Pesquisa Energética (EPE) .

The unit to treat natural gas is the main part of what remains of the original ambitious project, which also included two refineries, in the midst of the company’s divestment program to focus on offshore oil exploration.

When the works were interrupted, Comperj had 68% of the works completed. The initial refining train for the first refinery was 82% complete.

The complex, however, was at the center of allegations of irregularities in Operation Lava-Jato.

The company informed that it will receive information from interested parties, to evaluate models with greater potential for offering the land, and highlighted, in a report, the commitment made with the government of Rio de Janeiro and the Municipality of Itaboraí for the industrial development of the GasLub Pole.

Petrobras is also analyzing the integration of the assets of the GasLub Hub with the Duque de Caxias refinery, located in Baixada Fluminense, the only state-owned refinery in Rio de Janeiro, for the production of basic lubricating oils and fuels, in addition to the construction of a thermoelectric plant.
