Petrobras informed that it is negotiating new contract values with natural gas distributors. The company justifies the new values due to the high international price of the input, which rose about five times this year.
TO CNN, the state-owned company did not specify what the increase will be, but stated that natural gas prices rose by 500% abroad. The company confirmed that it is renegotiating prices with gas distributors for contracts that will be renewed from January 1st.
Adriano Pires, from the Brazilian Infrastructure Company (CBI), explained the rise in prices.
The main problem, according to him, is that contracts for 70% of gas distributors expire in December. Therefore, they try to buy gas from suppliers other than Petrobras.
However, these other suppliers are only able to supply around 12% of what they need, so the distributors end up being very dependent on the Brazilian state-owned gas.
The moment is one of transition, but, for now, Petrobras continues to have a monopoly on the market. The company says it does not have enough gas to supply the domestic market and, therefore, it needs to import the input.
Gas has risen a lot abroad, because of the recovery of the global economy and the green transition — since gas, despite being fossil fuel, is less polluting than oil. Therefore, Petrobras says it will have to pass on these increases.
Regarding the impacts on the consumer, Pires explained that piped gas is used in around 2% of homes in the country, serves cars and also industries.
The specialist warns that, if the government does not find a solution with Petrobras and with the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (Cade), we run the risk of a shortage of gas in the market in January”, said Adriano Pires.
