Petrobras has started an internal movement to try to shield itself against possible interference by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), sources at the state-owned company say.
Last Thursday (17), Petrobras’ Chief Financial and Investor Relations Officer, Rodrigo Araujo Alves, sent an email to the Ministry of Mines and Energy in which he asked whether a new list of state-owned board members could be presented at the next annual general meeting, scheduled for April 13. The answer was negative. The information was confirmed to CNN by the ministry.
The reason for the email was to follow a governance rite that any change in impact must be informed by the majority shareholder, in this case the Federal Government.
The possibility of a new list for the Board of Directors started to be raised by the government as a way of replacing the president of Petrobras, General Joaquim Silva e Luna. President Jair Bolsonaro is uncomfortable with the latest fuel price adjustment, and has since criticized Petrobras.
One of the members of the last list for the board is Rodolfo Landim, president of Flamengo, appointed as Bolsonaro’s favorite to take over Petrobras. As revealed by CNNLandim has already defended the change in the state-owned company’s pricing policy.
In addition to the formal e-mail to the government, the top of the state-owned company has also been looking for other ways to shield itself. One of them is via the executive board. This is because it is this collegiate body that sets the agenda for the Board of Directors. Thus, if a new list is presented, it will only be appreciated by the Board if the Board rules. And the entire board is linked to General Silva e Luna.
On another front, according to sources at the state-owned company, the current councilors have also been talking to each other about how to react to an eventual maneuver by the government. One idea that has been raised is, if the list without the general advances, that other councilors, in a gesture of solidarity, leave the council along with him.
