Petrópolis adds 1,117 homeless fifteen days after storm

Fifteen days after the tragedy caused by heavy rains in Petrópolis, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, the city government carried out a mapping of all the homeless, including people who are in points maintained by volunteers within communities.

According to the survey, the municipality has 1,117 people outside their homes, in 34 spaces, 955 of them in municipal and state schools and 162 in churches and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).

According to the Petrópolis city hall, the homeless receive food, hygiene items, in addition to health care, psychology and social assistance. All families will have access to social rent of R$ 1 thousand.

The Civil Defense has already received 3,673 calls since the rains of February 15, 2,834 of them for landslides. About 50 professionals work in the services and have about 2 thousand inspections in progress.

This Tuesday (1st), Mayor Rubens Bomtempo announced the availability of a 14,000 square meter plot of land to the state government for the construction of 300 homes for those affected by the rains.

Searches continue

The storm caused at least 231 deaths and five people are still missing. The numbers released on Tuesday night (1st) still do not include the body of Gisele Reis Bittencout, 40 years old, removed from the ruins of Chácara Flora this Tuesday.

Her son, Sidney Andrade, 17, is one of the people who are still in anguish over information about missing relatives. In addition to losing his parents and grandparents, he awaits the results of the search for his brother’s body.

Without his family, he tries to emancipate himself to take care of another seven-year-old brother. “I’m going to order the guard. I always took care of him, I always looked at him here and I will continue to take care of him”, said the young man to CNN.

The rescue operation, which reached more than 100 points in the city, focuses on Chácara Flora and along the Quitandinha River. The work continues even during the night, in the search for the missing.
