At least 34 people died as a result of heavy rains that hit the city of Petrópolis, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, on Tuesday afternoon (15). According to the city hall this Wednesday (16), there were also 171 landslides and 207 occurrences.
The municipality remains in a crisis stage and the prefecture asks the population to avoid leaving home. During the dawn, Civil Defense agents traveled through some parts of the city that were affected by heavy rains. In six hours it rained 260 millimeters. The accumulated was higher than expected for the month of February.
With the accumulation of mud and garbage dragged by the waters, several points of the Center have blocked roads. The orientation is that people from other regions avoid the city. Classes on the public network have been suspended.
To assist people who live in risk areas and have had to leave their homes, support points were opened. At the moment, 184 people are being assisted in the structures, mostly public schools.
So far, in the locality known as Morro da Oficina, in Alto da Serra, it is estimated that 80 houses have been affected. There are also records of damage in other regions such as 24 de Maio, Caxambu, Sargento Boening, Moinho Preto, Vila Felipe, Vila Militar and Uruguay, Washington Luiz and Coronel Veiga streets.

The Civil Defense reported that there is still a forecast of light to moderate rain at any time in the municipality. The authorities reinforce that the city is still in the Operational Stage of Crisis and advises the population to pay attention to reports and alerts that can be updated at any time. In an emergency, people should call 911.
