Petrópolis recorded the biggest storm in its history

The coordinator of the National Center for Monitoring and Alerts for Natural Disasters (Cemaden), meteorologist Marcelo Seluchi told CNN that the rains in Petrópolis this Tuesday (15) is the largest recorded in the history of the city.

Records began to be made in 1932.

In just six hours, 260mm of rain was recorded – most of it 230mm in three hours. This was expected for the entire month. The damage is greater because the storm was very concentrated in the center of the city.

The North and Northwest regions, in addition to Teresópolis, Friburgo and Itaipava, registered little or no rain.

According to Seluchi, there was a moisture channel in the Southeast region in the middle of a convergence zone. At the time of the rains, a cold front with strong winds came from the sea, which aggravated the situation.

The rains in the city have already killed 78 people and there have also been 189 landslides and 229 occurrences and there are 374 homeless or displaced.
