Petrópolis (RJ) has conditions for more rain this Friday

The city of Petrópolis, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, may suffer from more rain this weekend. The municipality, which has already recorded at least 120 deaths as a result of the storms, dawned this Friday with areas of instability and chances of more rain.

The reason for these rains continues to be a humidity corridor that comes from the south of the Amazon to the southeastern coast – the so-called South Atlantic Convergence Zone (ZCAS). This phenomenon favors the weather to become quite unstable, with the risk of heavy rains accompanied by lightning and gusts of wind.

“A new episode of SACZ has been organized and will maintain the conditions of rain and many clouds over the state of Rio de Janeiro until Sunday, February 20th”, stated Climatempo.

Climatempo warns that the volume of rain this Friday (18) may exceed 100 mm, and there is a risk of “the formation of flooding points, overflowing rivers and streams and landslides”.

According to the institution, what brought the heavy rains back to Petrópolis was one of the centers of instability formed by the ZCAS, which advanced during the afternoon of Thursday (17) towards the mountainous region of Rio.

In an interview with CNN this Thursday (17), the specialist warned of the forecast of increased rainfall in the region this weekend. “There should be a strong action by the public power to remove these people to prevent them from dying, because new landslides may occur as a result of these rains”, he evaluated.

The professor considers that the tragedy in Petrópolis is even worse than the occurrence of an earthquake, since in the mountainous region of Rio, “the situation remains due to the occurrence of new rains and the difficulty in removing these people who are in risk”.
