More than 100 people died as a result of landslides, floods and other impacts caused by heavy rains in Petrópolis on Tuesday (16).
According to Climatempo, the municipality of the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro may register heavy rains again this Thursday (17).
“The volume of rain will not be as intense as that recorded in the afternoon and evening of Tuesday (15), but the rain can come with strong intensity at times”, informs the institution.
The explanation for this return of instability in the region is a cold front that has advanced through the Southeast region of Brazil in recent days. .
The cold air helps organize a corridor of humidity that comes from the south of the Amazon to the southeastern coast – the so-called South Atlantic Convergence Zone (ZCAS).
This phenomenon favors the formation of heavy clouds and leaves the entire state of Rio de Janeiro at risk of heavy rain this Thursday (17).
As the soil is still very wet from the rain of the last few days, Climatempo warns of the risk of flooding, flooding and landslides.
Until Wednesday (16), Petrópolis had already registered 565.2 mm of rain in February. Climatempo claims it is the highest volume for the month since 2016.
