Pew Research: 16% of US citizens invest in cryptocurrencies

According to a survey by the Pew Research Center, 86% of US adults know something about cryptocurrencies, and 16% of Americans invest in them.

Pew Research Center researchers conducted
survey among US citizens from September 13 to September 19, 2021. According to the survey results, 86% of people said they had heard about cryptocurrencies, 24% are familiar with them, 16% of respondents invest in and trade in crypto assets, and 13% of survey participants do not know what it is. In 2015, the research center also conducted a survey about bitcoin among US citizens. At that time, 48% of those surveyed knew about it, and only 1% of people had ever bought bitcoin.

It turned out that men aged 18-29 (43%) show a particular interest in digital assets. Three out of ten Americans of this age trade bitcoin, ether, and other cryptocurrencies. In addition, far more men than women use digital assets (22% versus 10%). Analysts also concluded that the older a person is, the less likely they are to use cryptocurrencies.

The awareness of Americans about cryptoassets also depends on their ethnicity and income. For example, 43% of Asian Americans have more knowledge of cryptocurrencies compared to US citizens of Latin America (29%). High-wage Americans (31%) are well versed in cryptocurrencies, while the percentage of middle- and low-income people who are knowledgeable about cryptocurrencies is 25% and 21%, respectively.

According to a recent poll by analytical company YouGov, 27% of Americans agree to legalize bitcoin as a means of payment.
