PF arrests hacker who leaked data on 223 million Brazilians

The Federal Police arrested, this Tuesday (9), a hacker suspected of being responsible for the biggest data leak in Brazil, with the disclosure of information from 223 million Brazilians.

The 24-year-old man, known as Vandathegod, was detained in Feira de Santana (BA), 100 km from Salvador, and had been on the run since November 2023.

He had already been arrested in March 2021, in Operation Deepwater, which investigated the leak of Brazilian data, but remained on the run after breaking the electronic ankle bracelet he was wearing as part of the investigations.

The detainee has also been the target of other operations. In 2019, he was the target of Operation Defaced, carried out by the Civil Police of Minas Gerais, as a suspect of having invaded the websites of the corporation, the Public Ministry of Minas Gerais (MPMG), the Court of Justice of Goiás and the Brazilian Army.

The hacker published the data on an internet forum, according to the PF. The page specialized in exchanging information about cyber activities. On this website, information about individuals and legal entities was presented, such as CPF and CNPJ, full name and address.

According to the PF, the disclosure of part of the confidential data was made free of charge by a forum user who, at the same time, exposed the rest of the confidential information for sale — it could be acquired with cryptocurrencies.
