The Federal Police launched an operation on Monday (16) to combat the use of drones by the Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro. According to the investigation, the devices are used against security forces, rival factions and militiamen.
During the operation, a soldier responsible for operating drones to launch grenades was arrested. Investigations began after an attack by drug traffickers from the criminal organization against militia members. In this attack, the criminals used drones to launch grenades in the Gardênia Azul community, in the west zone of Rio.
During the investigation, the PF identified the military officer responsible for operating the drone used in an attack that occurred on February 15 of this year. The investigations also indicated that the drones were used to monitor police actions carried out in the Penha Complex and in areas dominated by drug trafficking by this faction.
In the morning, while serving one of the arrest warrants in the Penha Complex, the officers were met with gunfire. According to the PF, the officers were hit by shrapnel from shots fired by the criminals, which were initially harmless.
To avoid a larger armed confrontation and protect the local population, the operation team decided to interrupt the action.
The police went to serve two preventive arrest warrants: one against the leader of the criminal organization and another against the person responsible for operating grenade-launching drones, which is military equipment.
The targets of the warrants were reported by the Rio de Janeiro Public Prosecutor’s Office and will be charged with the crimes of organized crime and possession of explosive material. The court orders were issued by the 1st Criminal Court Specialized in Organized Crime of the TJRJ. Together, the prison sentences could amount to 14 years.
The circulation of five bus lines suffered a diversion in the route, but, according to Rio Bus, the operation was normalized.
