The Federal Police launched a new operation to combat the deforestation and illegal burning in the municipalities of Boca do Acre and Lábrea, in the south of Amazonas.
During the action this Thursday (26), they found 250 hectares of destroyed native forest in the Bom Lugar Federal Public Land, close to the border between the two municipalities.
In addition to the destroyed area, which is equivalent to around 230 football fields, agents seized chainsaws, gallons of fuel, engine oil and firearms.
A man was arrested red-handed and taken, along with the seized materials, to the Araçari Integrated Base, in Boca do Acre (AM).
Fires in Amazonas
The federal government extended the stay of National Public Security Force agents in Amazonas to fight forest fires for 73 days.
In addition to Boca do Acre Lábrea, National Force agents will also be allocated to the municipalities of Humaitá, Apuí, and Novo Aripuanã.
The state of Amazonas reached a historic record for fire outbreaks, according to monitoring by the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), which began in 1998.
The month of September already has 6,847 outbreaks, top number to the total recorded in September 2023.
In 2024, the Amazon biome also surpassed the number of fires recorded throughout last year.
All 62 municipalities in Amazonas are in emergency due to lack of rain and drought.
