PF carries out operation to arrest involved in homicides on indigenous lands

The Federal Police launched an operation, this Thursday (9), in the Serrinha Indigenous Land, in the municipality of Ronda Alta, in Rio Grande do Sul.

The purpose of the action is to pre-emptively arrest nine people accused of the death of two indigenous people last October, and comply with 16 search and seizure warrants issued by the Federal Court of Passo Fundo/RS.

The PF also investigates other crimes committed, such as attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms and arson.

According to investigations, a group of about 20 indigenous people, who were expelled from the community, gathered to protest against Serrinha’s leadership.

They were allegedly surrounded and surprised by armed men who supported the chiefs, and who shot at the demonstrators, fatally killing two indigenous people.

The rest managed to flee despite being chased.

Shortly thereafter, gunmen raided a place called Recanto do Inácio, where opponents were meeting, and set fire to four of the victims’ cars.

The PF is using 300 police officers from Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, from the 3rd Battalion of Police of Shock, from the Regional Ostensive Policing Command of Planalto and from the Road Command of the Military Brigade, and from the Military Fire Department, including paramedics and paramedics. fire fighting if necessary, and experts from Brasília.

The Serrinha Indigenous Land has an estimated population of 3,500 Indians, and has a history of several violent clashes recorded in recent years, and in 2017 a chief was ambushed and murdered.

The name of the operation is Kãgtén, which in the Kaingang language means “to kill” or “to make a killing”.
