The Federal Police launched an operation this Wednesday morning (4) to crack down on illegal currency exchange and money laundering on the border between Rio Grande do Sul and Uruguay.
Police officers are serving five search and seizure warrants in Santana do Livramento, a border city, in addition to executing court orders for the kidnapping of 17 vehicles , seven properties and blocking of 30 accounts of companies involved in the scheme. The total value of the blocks and seizures could reach R$60 million .
The investigation that culminated in this operation began in 2022 and aims to investigate the actions of an economic group from the city of Rio Grande do Sul that would use bank accounts of its own companies to move illicit money .
According to the police, the leader of the group took advantage of the entry of foreign currency into the establishments he headed to commit illegal exchange .
At the same time, company accounts were lent to smugglers in the region to direct payment for goods that entered the country illegally.
So far, the police identified 30 companies who habitually sent money to the business group’s accounts as a form of hidden payment for goods. The companies whose accounts were blocked today (4) are headquartered in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo and Minas Gerais.
