PF destroys five illegal mines in a conservation unit in Amazonas

The Federal Police (PF), in partnership with the National Force and the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), destroyed five illegal mining sites in the Campos Amazônicos National Park region, in the south of Amazonas, between last Friday and fair (5) and Sunday (7).

According to the corporation, the action was carried out as part of the second phase of Operation Atalaia, which seeks to prevent and repress the illegal extraction of cassiterite ore in the aforementioned area.

In addition to destroying the mines, the agents also seized or destroyed equipment used in illegal activities. According to the PF report, five accommodation shacks, a pump engine and a hydraulic excavator were seized or destroyed during the three days.

Investigations to combat the practice are ongoing. During the operation, the PF uses explosives to destroy the mining machinery. See images below .

In the first phase of Operation Atalia, carried out between March 5th and 6th, the Federal Police managed to demobilize nine mining sites also in the Campos Amazônico National Park.
