The 89th General Assembly of the International Criminal Police Organization, known worldwide as Interpol, resulted in the election, this Thursday (25), of the Brazilian Federal Police delegate Valdecy Urquiza to the position of vice president of the corporation.
Brazil’s unprecedented victory came after voting by 172 accredited delegations from Interpol’s 195 member countries, a record attendance rate at the event.
Valdecy Urquiza was elected with 55.8% of the vote, and defeated the Colombian candidate, Gen. Jorge Luis Vargas Valencia, who is the director general of the Colombian National Police.
In a statement, the Federal Police stated that Brazil’s achievement reflects “the important role of Brazilian diplomacy in building international support.” In his speech after the election, delegate Urquiza highlighted the need for a “more democratic, transparent and efficient” Interpol.
“The Brazilian delegation, led by the director general of the Federal Police, Paulo Maiurino, and made up of federal police officers and Brazilian diplomats, participated in successive bilateral meetings in order to build alliances around the Brazilian candidacy”, declared the PF in a statement.
“The Federal Police will be well positioned, participating and influencing strategic discussions relevant to global security and the effective fight against transnational crimes”, stated the director general of the Brazilian PF.
