The Federal Police in Tabatinga, Amazonas, launched an inquiry to investigate the report of an armed attack by illegal fishermen in the Javari Valley.
The investigation was opened this Thursday (17th), according to the Federal Police superintendent in Amazonas, Eduardo Fontes.
Police officers were sent to Javari to listen to the Kanamari indigenous people and try to identify the alleged aggressors.
The Union of Indigenous Peoples of Vale do Javari (Unijava) reported that it is finalizing the agreement with the Federal Police on the first actions in the case, and that it will comment on the situation “as soon as the first diligences of the PF are carried out”.
The region came to the fore in June of this year, after the death of British journalist Dom Phillips and indigenist Bruno Pereira Araújo.
Both were considered missing as of June 5, in the Vale do Javari region, an area of indigenous lands in the Amazon.
After the case gained repercussions, several public figures, environmentalists, activists, artists and opposition politicians went public to demand urgent measures to search for the duo.
One of the main suspects in the disappearance, Amarildo Oliveira da Costa, known as Pelado, confessed to participating in the murder of the pair more than a week later 🇧🇷
