PF investigates deviations of BRL 6 million in hospitals in southern Rio de Janeiro

The Federal Police investigates the diversion of six million reais from health care in the municipality of Barra do Piraí, in the south of the State of Rio de Janeiro.

The operation, named Skal, in reference to the word “health” in Scandinavian languages, is the result of a joint investigation between the Federal Police and the Federal Public Ministry.

The first complaints about the diversion of public resources in works carried out in local hospitals were in 2018.

According to the PF, throughout the investigation, it was found that municipal servants were working together with companies to divert resources intended for the health of the municipality, mainly through private hospitals that serve the population through an agreement with the government.

Among those investigated are high-ranking employees of the Municipal Health Department of Barra do Piraí, employees of the main local hospitals, as well as companies from other regions of the state.

This Wednesday (15) four temporary arrest warrants and nineteen search and seizure warrants are being served. Ten teams left the PF Superintendence in Rio at dawn.

Another nine came from the Volta Redonda Police Station, also in the south of Rio de Janeiro. In total, 120 police officers participate in the action in the cities of Barra do Piraí, Vassouras, Magé, Nova Iguaçu, Duque de Caxias, São João de Meriti and in the capital Rio de Janeiro.

In Duque de Caxias, one of the addresses visited was a marble shop, used to launder the money obtained from the scheme. Those investigated will be liable for the crime of embezzlement, which is the embezzlement of public money, passive corruption and criminal association.
