PF launches operation against organization accused of illegal mining in Yanomami Land

This Thursday (19) the Federal Police (PF) carried out the Urihi Wapopë 2 operation in Roraima, against an organization accused of illegally extracting gold and cassiterite from mining in the Yanomami Indigenous Land. Four search and seizure warrants are being carried out at the homes of those involved, all issued by the 4th Federal Criminal Court.

According to investigations, the organization is linked to air taxi companies, among which one has at least 20 helicopters, allegedly used to transport illegally extracted ore.

According to the PF, the group also concealed its assets through transfers of goods to third parties, with remittances of money abroad using false identities and illegal exchange operations. The investigation also shows that those involved created a shell company to hide the illicit financial movement.

The name of the operation, Urihi Wapopë, means earth eaters. The 2nd phase alludes to the name used by the Yanomami peoples to refer to the prospectors, who invade the Yanomami Indigenous Land, destroy the forested areas, close to the rivers, in search of ore.
