PF mega-operation seizes 600 tons of marijuana on the border with Paraguay

The 43rd phase of Operation New Alliance, by the Federal Police with support from the National Anti-Drug Secretariat of Paraguay, has already seized 594 tons of marijuana, according to data obtained by CNN .

The action began a week ago and the amount was recorded until last Monday (8). So far, the following have been seized:

  • marijuana eradicated: 558 tons;
  • chopped marijuana: 36 tons;
  • pressed marijuana: 680 kg.

The work of agents from the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (Dicor) is carried out with Senad-PY in Amambay, a large state in Paraguay, whose capital is the city of Pedro Juan Caballero, and borders Mato Grosso do Sul and border cities, such as Ponta Porã.

The mega-operation also destroyed 63 “narco camps”, which are places to process drugs; 380 kg of seeds and a total of plots (roças) eradicated in 93. See video below.

The total number of hectares of marijuana destroyed was 186, the equivalent of 170 football fields.

Exclusive images obtained by CNN show agents eradicating so-called “marijuana gardens”, which are farms or farms used for illegal cultivation of cannabis, the plant that gives rise to marijuana and its derivatives. See images below.

The PF's work is done aerially, with helicopters, in order to locate the large planting regions on the Paraguayan border. The objective of the PF is to prevent the drug ready for sale from reaching large Brazilian capitals.

According to members of the PF interviewed by CNN , the entire Operation is carried out on Paraguayan soil because it is the place where the illicit plantations are actually located, due to the local reality. The PF lends its expertise, with intelligence, georeferencing, in addition to air support from its tactical aviation group, and also the cost of the operation, as it believes it is cheaper to combat this type of trafficking at its source.

According to agents, at least 80% of the marijuana produced in Paraguay is destined for the Brazilian market. Therefore, there is also a perimeter limitation so that eradications can take place, at most, within a distance of 30 km from the border with Brazil.

Operation Nova Aliança has six phases per year. This is the second of 2024 and will be completed on Thursday (11).
