PF points out participation of military in illegal mining scheme in Amazonas

The Federal Police (PF) pointed out the involvement of high-ranking Army soldiers in a scheme to leak information about operations to combat illegal mining in Japurá in the interior of the Amazon.

Investigations began in October 2020, with the arrest of two people while trying to transport gold without any documentation proving the origin of the ore, which was valued at R$ 18,600. From there, it was possible to identify evidence of an extensive network of illegal mining exploration.

According to the PF, the military received regular amounts from a mineral import and export company.

In return, an official would supposedly pass on privileged and advance information to other members of the criminal group, interfering with operations to combat illegal mining. His wife would also be involved in the scheme receiving amounts on behalf of those investigated.

Those involved took advantage of the difficulty of environmental inspection in the Japurá region to commit crimes against the environment.

In order to reach the members of the scheme and gather evidence, federal police and Army soldiers carried out an operation on Tuesday (27) and served temporary arrest and search and seizure warrants in the cities of Porto Velho (RR), Ponta Grossa (PR) and in the Amazonian capital, Manaus.

In a note, the Brazilian Army confirmed that a military police inquiry was launched to determine the officer’s involvement, but considered that the case is under judicial secrecy and that it will not comment on the ongoing investigation.
