This Monday (13), the Federal Police began providing free access to high-resolution satellite images for regions in a state of calamity in Rio Grande do Sul.
All municipalities in RS can request access, but those that have declared a disaster have priority. State agencies can also apply for membership.
Access is free and does not require financial compensation. More than 400 institutions already participate in the program, which is financed by the National Public Security Fund and the Federal Police.
The action takes place through the Brasil Mais Program, from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security. The initiative aims to assist public bodies in responding to natural disasters, such as floods and landslides, by providing accurate and up-to-date information about the affected areas.
How to access
To request access to images, public bodies must send an email from the office of the institution's highest authority, for example, the mayor or the mayor's office. The email must be sent to [email protected].
In the message it is necessary to provide some basic information, such as the name, acronym and address of the institution; name, position and email of the highest authority and focal points; list of users for access (name, position, email, telephone, capacity). The data can be supplemented later.
The Brasil Mais program has no limit on institutions, users or access, and municipalities can use as many images as they need to help combat disasters. In addition to satellite images, access to landslide alerts is also available. In the last 30 days, the program issued 312 alerts for Rio Grande do Sul.
Brasil Mais is one of the strategic projects of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security. It is the largest operational remote sensing project in the country, providing daily high-resolution satellite images of all of Brazil, as well as automatic alerts for various environmental crimes, such as deforestation, mining, fires and planting of illicit crops.
The program is mainly used in the Legal Amazon region to monitor environmental crimes.
