PF requests extradition of former CEO of Americanas

The Federal Police (PF) has already filed a request for the extradition of the former CEO of Americanas Miguel Gutierrez, according to the CNN . The executive was arrested this Friday (28) in Madrid, Spain.

The request was forwarded to the Federal Court. Even if the judge authorizes it, however, the final decision will be made by the Spanish government.

Under the extradition treaty signed between Brazil and Spain in 1988, the judge in the case has up to 80 days to formalize the request, which may or may not be accepted by the European country.

Gutierrez had been on the run since Thursday (27), when the PF was the target of a preventive arrest warrant in a Federal Police operation, but he was not located. The executive’s name was even included in Interpol’s Red Notice.

Miguel Gutierrez is accused of being involved in one of the biggest frauds in the history of the Brazilian financial market. The amounts involved are around R$25.3 billion. Thursday’s operation was monitored by the Brazilian Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM).

Among the crimes investigated in the investigation are: market manipulation, use of privileged information, criminal association and money laundering.

If convicted, the penalties for the retailer’s former executives here in Brazil could reach 26 years in prison.
