Thirty-three Venezuelans were rescued this Tuesday (19) in a shelter in Pacaraima (RR).
The Federal Police’s inspection action with the Federal Public Defender’s Office and the Public Ministry of Labor was carried out after receiving complaints that Venezuelan migrants were victims of labor similar to slavery.
At the location, according to the PF, the situation of exploitation of foreigners was identified, who were in the process of entering Brazil. They would pay R$100 per month to stay there and would be forced to work for the shelter itself, according to the investigation.
The PF details that migrants could only leave with the permission of the owners and would be prohibited from working elsewhere, in addition to having part of their documents withheld, being booked and threatened.
The shelter would be linked to a religious institution, so Venezuelans would also be required to participate in its activities routinely.
One person was arrested for illegal possession of a weapon. The owners of the establishment were not on site at the time of the inspection. According to the PF, investigations continue.
