The Federal Police seized a ton of cocaine at the Port of Itapoá, in Santa Catarina, in the early hours of Thursday (12). The drug was in a compartment inside a ship that was going out of Brazil.
The operation was the result of maritime patrolling actions carried out by the Special Maritime Police Group (GEPOM). The ship, flying the Liberian flag, was destined for Morocco.
The seizure occurred after the identification of an unusual movement of a second vessel, which was lifting volumes onto the ship, raising suspicions of illicit activities. The suspicions were confirmed by images from the port terminal, which captured part of this movement.
Federal Police teams carried out a thorough inspection on board the ship, which lasted more than two days due to the size of the vessel, until the drugs were found. During the operation, five individuals, nationals of the Philippines and Monte Negro, were arrested red-handed.
There is a suspicion that the drugs, upon arriving in Morocco, would go to Europe. The detained foreigners were taken to the Joinville Police Station, where they are being charged with the crime of drug trafficking.
