PF should open new investigation against Rio Grande do Sul councilor accused of xenophobia

The Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, officially requested the Federal Police (PF) to investigate a statement made by councilor Sandro Fantinel (Patriotas), from Caxias do Sul (RS), in November last year. He said that “a minister of the Federal Supreme Court participated in an orgy with children outside Brazil”.

The statement was made during a speech at a session at the Caxias City Council.

Fantinel is the same councilor accused of xenophobia when, last week, he asked agribusiness entrepreneurs in the region to hire Argentines instead of workers from Bahia. The gaucho politician said that “the only culture of the Bahians is to live on the beach playing drums”.

Days later, Fantinel wept, apologized and said he made the xenophobic statement during a “mental lapse”. Regret came after she received a barrage of criticism and accusations. He was expelled from his party, Patriotas, was impeached – which will be analyzed by the Chamber – and faces a public civil action filed by the Public Ministry of RS.

Despite having sent the letter to the Federal Police only today, Dino had already gone public to say what measure he would take in relation to the speech made last year. Without mentioning Fantinel, the Justice Minister wrote on Twitter: “A political agent (RS councilor) claims that a STF minister participated in an ‘orgy with children’. Today I will send the speech to the Federal Police, since it is a crime against federal authority. We continue to fight every day against lies and aggression.”

Dino made the post on his official profile on the last day 2.

The PF investigation, after opening the investigation scheduled for this week, should be the responsibility of the Superintendence of Rio Grande do Sul, where the case took place. The expectation is that Fantinel’s new problem will be investigated as part of the Fake News inquiry.
