Pfizer and Moderna raise prices on coronavirus vaccines in Germany amid pandemic

Significant increases in the prices of vaccines for coronavirus at Germany pharmaceutical companies impose in the midst of a pandemic Pfizer/Biontech and Modern.

According to documents detailing how many vaccines Berlin ordered, from which producer and at what price, obtained by Germany’s NDR and WDR, the country spent a total of 13.1 billion euros on vaccines.

The documents show, according to his publication Euractivthat the government ordered 39 billion doses of vaccines from Biontech/Pfizer at a price of around 15.50 euros each one him December 2020. Nine months later, the price had risen to 23.20 euros per item. The price for Moderna vaccines also increased by more than 50% in three months.

For Wolf-Dieter Ludwig, chairman of the Drugs Committee of the German Medical Association, this shows that companies took advantage of a situation in which countries were in desperate need of vaccines, commanding a higher price. “For me this is doubtful because, looking at the sales revenue, you could have stayed at the original price,” he told broadcaster NDR.

THE Pfizer responded in media reports, with a company representative telling NDR that “you should not rely on information that cannot be verified». However, the amount Germany spent on the vaccines reported by the three media outlets was confirmed by the German Ministry of Health.

The new media reports are one of the few pieces of information that have become known so far about the EU’s supply of COVID-19 vaccines.

Despite repeated calls from lawmakers and civil society, the European Commission and the pharmaceutical companies that supplied the bloc with vaccines they have so far only made public the contracts entered into between them in censored form.
