The Attorney General’s Office asked the Federal Supreme Court to send the complaint against former Minister of Education Milton Ribeiro for alleged homophobic statements to the Judiciary Section of the Federal District.
“In the present case, it is beyond doubt that the crime committed by the then Minister of Education Milton Ribeiro is linked to the exercise of the functions he performed, especially considering that the facts occurred during an interview granted in the capacity of Minister of State for Education and on the educational context Brazilian”, said Lindôra Maria Araújo, Deputy Attorney General of the Republic.
In March, the subject of an investigation by the Federal Police and allegations of illegalities involving the distribution of funds from the portfolio, Milton Ribeiro made the position available.
The complaint was presented by the Attorney General’s Office itself based on the judgment of the STF, which, by 8 votes to 3, equated the crime of racism with homophobia in Brazil.
The investigation began after an interview with the former education minister in which he linked homosexuality to “disadjusted families” and said that there were teenagers “choosing to be gay”.
The ex-minister’s defense was sought, but he has not yet manifested.
