The vice-president of the Federal Council of Medicine, doctor Rosylane Rocha, said in an interview with CNN that “Phenol is not to blame for injuries to patients”, but rather the improper practice by people who are not doctors.
The CFM sent a letter to the National Health Surveillance Agency this Tuesday (25) asking Anvisa to reconsider the ban on the purchase, sale and use of phenol in the country.
“Phenol has been used for decades. There are scientific studies that prove its safety and effectiveness in treating the patient with the appropriate technique carried out by the doctor,” he stated.
The doctor reiterated that people who are not qualified, neither legally nor technically, are using the substance incorrectly, which causes serious injuries to patients.
Businessman Henrique Chagas, 27 years old, passed away on June 3 minutes after undergoing an aesthetic procedure known as phenol peeling.
“We carried out a survey 10 years ago and saw that there are 10,000 police reports with complaints from patients themselves who suffered serious injuries due to the illegal practice of medicine”, he shared. According to Rosylane, the data comes from the National Council of Justice (CNJ) and the civil police of 22 states.
The vice president said that the tragedy in São Paulo awakened a situation that has existed for more than a decade. She also warned of the need to monitor social networks regarding the content that can be accessed by the population.
“After people look for digital influencers, these people who present themselves as doctors, think that they are being treated by doctors, often in inappropriate places for the procedures. There are no limits to the presentation of these procedures”, he adds.
The doctor highlighted that the CFM asks Anvisa to control the distribution of Phenol only under medical prescription.
