Phenol peeling: police look for beautician responsible for procedure that killed patient in SP

The Civil Police are trying to locate beautician Natalia Fabiana De Freitas Antonio, 29 years old, responsible for the aesthetic procedure that caused the death of a patient in São Paulo last Monday (3). The case is treated as a homicide.

Natalia was an influencer and presented herself on social media as Natalia Becker. She owned a space called Studio Natalia Becker, in the Campo Belo neighborhood, in the south of São Paulo. It was there that businessman Henrique Chagas, 27, underwent a procedure known as phenol peeling.

According to the police report, Henrique felt ill after the procedure. His husband reported that he spoke with the businessman while he was recovering. He was shaking and said he was in pain.

“After approximately five minutes, Henrique shook his hand [do marido] and began to breathe very heavily through his mouth. As a result, he shouted for help, at which point Natalia and the employees came to help Henrique. Natalia and the employees called Samu [Serviço de Atendimento Móvel de Urgência]which confirmed the death”, informs the police report.

According to delegate Eduardo Luís Ferreira, from the 27th DP of São Paulo (Campo Belo), Natalia left the clinic after the incident and, since then, the police have no information about her whereabouts. “Right now it is becoming clear that, yes, she escaped from prison in the act.”

“Yesterday [segunda-feira, dia 3], it was informed that she would no longer be at the clinic because when she found out about the episode, she had felt ill and gone to the hospital. They indicated two likely hospitals where she could have gone –her husband himself indicated–, but we were there yesterday, we came back today and, in fact, that didn't happen. She was not in those hospitals where they said she would have gone,” said the delegate.

Ferreira adds that the police went to the address indicated as the beautician's residence, but did not find her. “We went there and got the information that they hadn’t lived there for about three months. So, there are several factors that lead us to believe that, in fact, what happened yesterday was an escape from a prison in the act. Because if she had been taken here yesterday, she would certainly have been charged with a crime.”

The case was registered as a suspicious death and is now being treated as a homicide. “Since yesterday, on the occasion of the opening of our police investigation, as soon as we learned of the young man's death, we have been working with the hypothesis of homicide. In other words: someone caused someone’s death. Either negligently or, possibly, intentionally. We still don’t know for sure the definition of what type of homicide we have there”, explained the delegate.

Investigated could not perform procedure

According to Ferreira, Natalia could not perform this type of procedure, as she is not a doctor. “Phenol peeling cannot be done in a beauty clinic,” she said. “Phenol is a very dangerous substance. That’s why there has to be control within the surgical center,” she added.

“There was, in fact, no pre-procedure examination to check his health conditions. And she couldn't even do it, even because she's not a doctor. She wouldn't even be able to ask. The only thing he said the victim would have received was a cream to apply moments before the procedure. Just it. No one tried to find out if he had a health problem or if he could have any problems arising from this treatment”, highlighted the delegate.

The police report states that Henrique arrived at the clinic at around 10 am. “The procedure was carried out normally. Initially, the facial skin was cleaned and topical anesthetic was applied. Then, the face was scraped so that the phenol could act on the skin. In the meantime, Henrique was given a dose of Alivium 500 mg. After this start, phenol was applied, at which time the declarant [marido de Henrique] he could no longer follow the procedure and waited outside.” The procedure ended around noon.

To the police, Natalia's husband, Jorge Macedo Da Cunha, who also owns the clinic, stated that “this procedure is superficial and, therefore, no previous examination is required”.

“The preparation consists of cleaning the skin on the same day as the procedure, with the application of anesthetic. Then, phenol is applied. After that, the patient stays in the clinic for at least thirty minutes to recover from the burning of the face, which can affect the eyes”, said Jorge in testimony.

Resident of the city of Pirassununga (SP), around 210 km from the capital of São Paulo, Henrique Chagas paid around R$4,500 for the procedure. The objective, according to his husband, was to reduce the acne marks he had on his face.
