Philippine President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is in Australia

Philippine President-elect Ferdinand Marc Jr. visited Australia today, according to an Age newspaper article, sparking protests in Melbourne.

Protesters gathered in the city center and said Marcos was likely to pay a private visit to the country.

Reuters was unable to confirm this information from the Philippine embassy in Australia, which did not respond to a request for comment.

A spokesman for Marcos in Manila did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but was scheduled to give a press conference later in the day.

Age wrote that an Australian government spokesman confirmed that the Manila government had informed of Marcos’s private visit.

The Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not respond to a request for comment.

The newly elected president is the son of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos, and the return of the political dynasty to power has divided the country.

The president-elect’s father died in exile in Hawaii in 1989.

Former dictator Ferdinand Marcos, Imelda’s wife and their inner circle embezzled about $ 10 billion in public money while in power while millions of Filipinos lived in extreme poverty.

Tens of thousands of dissidents were imprisoned, tortured or killed.
