Philippines: At 45 dead from tropical storm Nalge

In reviewing the tragic account from the passage of Tropical Storm Nalge the government of Philippinesnoting that the dead are 45 and not 72 as originally announced.

The officials of the civil protection service of the country admitted that rescue crews sent to the flood-hit southern part of the country on Friday made mistakes in their counts, resulting in some deaths being double-counted.

“When we received the counts at 06:00 today (Saturday), we realized that there were 40 dead, 31 injured and 15 missing.”said Naguib Sinaribo, spokesman and head of civil protection for the southern part of the country.

Five other people died elsewhere in the countryexplained the head of the national civil protection service, as a result the new death toll is 45.

A previous incorrect count had 72 dead, 14 missing and 33 injured.

Nalgue, which had been expected since Thursday, finally hit the Philippines’ largest island, Luzon, at dawn today, packing winds of up to 95 km per hour, an hour after it hit the sparsely populated island of Catanduanes.
