Philippines: At least 72 dead from tropical storm Nalge

A total of 72 people have lost their lives so far from it tropical storm Nalge that caused floods and landslides in the southern part of Philippinesas announced today by the National Disaster Management Council (NDRRMC).

Maguindanao province accounted for the most casualties (67), while two people died in Sultan Kundarat, two in South Cotabato and one in the Visayas region, NDRRMC spokesman Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro told radio station DZMM. Fill in that 33 people were injured and the fate of another 14 is unknown.

Packed with sustained winds of 95 km/h (and gusts of up to 160 km/h), Tropical Storm Nalge began battering the eastern province of Catanduanes on Saturday. It is expected to bring heavy rains to the greater capital region as it crosses the island of Luzon heading towards the South China Sea, according to the Philippine Meteorological Service.

On Friday, search and rescue teams they recovered dozens of bodies from the muddy waterssince the tropical storm caused widespread flooding and landslides.

On average, the Philippines is hit by 20 tropical storms each year.
