The Philippine Congress today announced Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the son of the former dictator, winner of the recent elections, and confirmed that he will be the next president of the country.
The proclamation formalizes what was previously considered unthinkable, namely the return of the infamous Marcos political dynasty to power after a “popular revolution” in 1986, which ousted her from the presidential palace and forced her into exile in Hawaii.
The 64-year-old Marcos, known as “Bong Bong”, will officially take office on June 30 by Rodrigo Duterte, and will serve until 2028 with the daughter of the outgoing president, Sara Duterte-Carpio, as his vice president.
“President-elect Bong Bong Marcos and Vice-President-elect Sarah Duterte were real rock stars. However, the most important task for the winners today is to unite our compatriots,” Senate Majority Leader Miguel Zu told parliament. .
Marcos was elected with 31.6 million votes or 58.77% of the votes and with a turnout of 82%.
His wife and three sons were also present in Congress, where the family has won a seat in almost every election since returning from exile in the 1990s.
Also present was the new president’s 92-year-old mother, Imelda, the man who moved the threads, who was applauded by the House as she posed for photos.
Marcos is almost certain to secure a majority with his sister Imee as senator, the son of Ferdinand a member of Congress and his cousin Martin Romualdes, the leader of the majority in the House, which is expected to appoint a speaker, which shows range of power that the family is expected to have.
