NAND flash controller Phison Electronics today announced it is shipping the PS5018-E18 controllers with PCIe Gen4 support and 176-layer NAND flash.
According to the company, it is the highest performing model in the E18 lineup. It offers sequential read speeds up to 7400 MB / s and sequential write speeds up to 7000 MB / s. Even more performance gains are achieved by reducing the latency of a random read operation. The corresponding performance gains are claimed to be up to 35% over previous models with shallow queue depths. As a result, the new E18 delivers the best game load times of any consumer SSD in its class.
The 176-layer NAND gate replacement architecture combines charge traps with a CMOS-under-array (CuA) design. The die is about 30% smaller than the previous generation 96-layer NAND and 35% more read and write performance.
The PS5018-E18 controller is designed to be manufactured using TSMC’s 12nm process technology.
