According to local police, the incident occurred at a hotel near Karon Beach on the island of Phuket. The 31-year-old Russian crypto investor is believed to have been targeted over an outstanding digital currency debt. One of the criminals demanded $120,000 from the man as compensation and tried to forcefully gain access to his crypto wallet, threatening physical violence.
When the investor refused to give the money, the attackers beat him. The man was knocked unconscious by a blow to the head, and the criminals fled with $20,000 in cash, leaving the crypto investor tied up in the hotel bathroom.
Thai law enforcement authorities believe that one of the suspects may have fled to Dubai, so the police have involved migration authorities in the investigation. Authorities continue to search for another attacker who may remain in Thailand.
In October, a Ukrainian tourist vacationing in Thailand was forced to pay extortionists 250,000 USDT. Thai law enforcement later detained six police officers on charges of extorting 165,000 USDT from a Vanuatu citizen.
