Physicist and former president of Eletrobras Luiz Pinguelli Rosa dies

Nuclear engineer and physicist Luiz Pinguelli Rosa died in the early hours of this Thursday (3), at the age of 80, after being hospitalized for Covid-19 almost a month ago.

One of the greatest energy specialists in the country, Pinguelli was president of Eletrobras between 2003 and 2004 and was director of Coppe/UFRJ in Rio de Janeiro several times.

A member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, elected in 2003, the professor was a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC/UN) and has already received the Forum Award from the American Physical Society in 1992.

In the course of his career, he received the commendation with the degree of Chevalier de L’ordre des Palmes Académiques, awarded in 1998 by the French Ministry of Education; the Gold Golf Prize, science category, granted in 2000 by the State Council of Culture of the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro and the Medals of the Order of Merit from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense, in 2003.

The current director of Coppe/UFRJ, Romildo Toledo, mourned Pinguelli’s death and declared a three-day mourning period at the institution.

“Coppe/UFRJ declares official mourning for three days in honor of its illustrious Professor. On my behalf and on behalf of the board, of which Pinguelli was a part, and of the entire Social Body of Coppe, we offer our sincere condolences and solidarity to the family and friends of our dear Professor Pinguelli”, he said in a statement.
