Pianissimo Festival at Copacabana Palace Theater brings glamor to Rio de Janeiro

The Pianissimo Festival arrives in Brazil for the first time with major concerts. The series featuring some of the most talented and promising pianists in the world, takes place over four memorable and glamorous nights at the Teatro Copacabana Palace, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro.

During the performances, international musicians play on a concert piano that is a reference in terms of sound and acoustics.

The opening of the festival, which took place on Thursday (25), was performed by the Croatian pianist, Jan Nikovich, winner of several international awards and competitions.

The musician has performed throughout Europe both in recitals and with renowned orchestras, including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. His repertoire includes works by Franz Lizst, Johannes Brahms and Frédéric Chopin. He recently won prizes at the Radovljica and James Monttram piano competitions in Manchester. Furthermore, he has already shared the stage with Lang Lang in Barcelona and at the Allianz Arena, in Munich, in front of an audience of 70 thousand people.

Every time I play somewhere it's an honor and I'm very happy to share it with the public and especially in a new place I've never been, in a new country I've never been to before. I've always been a fan of Brazil, so I'm excited to be here. It's kind of insane… I'm just trying to stay focused on the piano (practicing playing), but it's a little hard being in this amazing place here

Around the world, Pianissimo concerts are held in large venues. In previous years, spectators have enjoyed masterpieces by Beethoven and Rachmaninov in the Italian Skylight Hall at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, as well as a century-old ballroom in the heart of the Swiss Alps.

On the opening night of the event here in Brazil, several special guests went to the Copacabana Palace to honor the opening of the festival. Among them, friends Decca and Thaïs, who were enchanted by the show.

Look, unbelievable! A boy who plays with the emotion on his face, the feeling in his heart and everything comes into his hands. It's incredible how a person can play with his whole body and express himself the way he expressed himself.

Thaïs, event producer

I think people should come because it's rare for us to have presentations like this here. And I'm sure we have fans and an audience to be able to watch and be as moved as I was today.

Decca, communications advisor

Alexey Gorodnev is the founder of the Pianissimo Piano Festival. He says that the project emerged seven years ago in Russia and the idea of bringing it to Brazil was also to share talented arts with a new audience.

For us, the idea of Pianissimo is to share talented arts with a new audience. That's what we tried to do, kind of map it out for all the artists and Brazil. In South America it's really cool, an opportunity for us, it's a new audience, and we believe that the audience will love it, they will definitely love classical music.

The project also has support from the House of Culture GES-2, one of the largest and most modern cultural institutions in Russia, based in Moscow, and for the head of institutional relations, Anastasia Gvozdeva, this is the first step for new projects to be carried out in Brazil.
