Pilot and family group are among the victims on Capitol Hill, says delegate

The regional delegate for Passos, Marcos Pimenta, from Minas Gerais, said at a press conference that ten people had died. And that at the moment, they have a precarious recognition. “Everything is being made with bodily fragments such as objects, tattoos, rings. However, the forensics will “strengthen these evidences to have an official confirmation”, he comments.

“The pilot has already been identified, as well as a grandfather, a grandmother, a father and a 14-year-old teenager. Everyone knew each other, they were in a common environment”, said the delegate.

“There was a couple from the state of São Paulo, and in a fatality, the stone fell on them in a fierce way.”

Before leaving for the ride, the delegate said that the owner of the boat took a picture. “And this photo is helping us to recognize the victims.”

He explains that identifying victims is not an easy skill to do, something routine. “We cannot accelerate more than what we are doing”, he said.

He reports that a victim has already been identified, a 68-year-old man. And that the federal police made the identification institute available, and who will feel whether it will be necessary or not, will be the criminal experts in the city of Passos.

The delegate affirms that the fire department, the police and the Civil Defense are working without any vanity to identify and then, cautiously, to blame.

“At first we wanted to identify and calm these families”, he said.

Asked about future excursions, Pimenta said that “the Civil Defense will talk about whether to release the area or not, and the city halls too. We will give full support to the municipalities in the region.”

Sgt. Wander Silva, from the Civil Defense of MG, said at a press conference that there will be a new meeting with mayors and agents to establish rules that can maintain the safety of tourists in the region.

The number of deaths in the collapse of a rock on boats in a canyon of Lake Furnas in the city of Capitólio, in Minas Gerais, reached ten.

When asked about the possible perpetrators of the incident, the sergeant said that this is not the time to think about it. “It would be frivolous of me to speak. But it will be verified later.”

According to him, the teams are concerned about finishing the search. “I believe that until I find all the fragments, operations will continue.”

The mayor of Capitol Hill, Cristiano Geraldo, said he was upset with the disaster.

He began the interview by thanking the people who helped make this disaster worse — sailors who came back to save other victims and volunteers.

Cristiano decreed three days of mourning in the municipality “in solidarity with the people who work and live in this region and especially with the victims.”

The mayor also said that there is a law that regulates the permanence in the canyons region. And the revisions of “all points are being worked on by the Navy”.

According to him, looking inside a tragedy and asking a question about the culprit of the fall from the wall would not be virtuous.

Asked what could have caused the accident, the mayor said that in relation to the geological analysis, this was very well commented on the waterspouts. However, “this will be done through a technical study.”

Cristiano Geraldo maintained the speech of other authorities and said that “the concern is to assist the victims’ families, the people who had an accident and lived through that at the time.”

Mayor of São José da Barra

The mayor of São José da Barra, Serginho (PSB), said at the press conference that the city is shaken. “We lost three loved ones. Lives that matter a lot to us. But we have to face it.”

The mayor thanked the agencies that are helping to rescue the victims.

According to him, at the hospital in São José da Barra, yesterday afternoon, seven people were injured. Some were hospitalized, others had to be sent to the Santa Casa de Misericórdia in the Passos region.

“I was there, and we have to place a lot of value on search and rescue agencies. I was there, very sad. Really sad!”
