The Government of São Paulo carried out an operation to improve water circulation in the Pinheiros River on Tuesday afternoon (10). The action aimed to pump water from the river to contribute to improving the channel and reducing the presence of algae in the area.
Some parts of the river have had a greenish color since Sunday (8). According to the Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo (Cetesb), the proliferation of algae in the water explains the green color.
Water was pumped from the Lower Channel to the Upper Channel of the Pinheiros River. The operation began at 6 pm yesterday (10) and ended at 5 am this Wednesday (11).
Anderson Esteves, superintendent of the Department of Water and Electric Energy (DAEE), explained that the dry weather harms the quality of the river’s water.
“Rain is essential for the river to function and, as there is no rain, the river is in this critical situation,” he said.

The capital of São Paulo is expected to record a maximum temperature of 34°C today (11), according to Climatempo’s forecast. The agency also points out that the city is on alert for a relative humidity of 20% to 12%.
On Wednesday, after the end of the operation, the authorities will discharge the excess water. This means that the accumulation of water, located in the Upper canal, will be redirected to the Lower canal through a spillway in the structure of the São Paulo Plant.
The government says the maneuver aims to ensure a balanced water flow, avoiding disruptions and promoting better water quality in the system.
The operation was carried out by DAEE, which is the state’s water resources regulatory body linked to the Secretariat of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics (Semil), and by the Metropolitan Water and Energy Company (Emae).
