An 18-year-old girl died after being dragged by the force of water from a ruptured pipe and drowning in the Botas River, in Belford Roxo, Baixada Fluminense. The case happened last Saturday afternoon (6).
According to Águas do Rio, the company responsible for water distribution and pipe maintenance, company employees were on site to repair the broken pipe.
On social media, residents of the Heliópolis neighborhood and region report that the water supply in several streets was interrupted about three days ago. Many people have used the water from the leak to supply their homes. According to residents, the young woman had drowned while trying to collect water at the site.
In the version presented by the company, the young woman, identified by Belford Roxo city hall as Sara Gomes de Souza, was with a group of people and was bathing in the river when she was injured.
“People started screaming, trying to get her out of the water. The employees tried to get down, provide initial care, put her in the car and take her to the Belford Roxo Municipal Hospital alive,” an Águas do Rio employee reported to CNN .
In a statement, the company also highlighted that “the incident did not occur in the same place where the dealership team worked”.
According to Belford Roxo city hall, Sara was admitted to the hospital with cardiorespiratory arrest. She received first aid and was intubated, but did not survive and died at 11:50 pm. The young woman's body was sent to the Legal Medical Institute (IML) of Nova Iguaçu.
