Pix helped with inclusion, but fraud worries, says expert

Pix, which completes a year of implementation in Brazil on Tuesday (16), has moved over R$ 1.5 trillion since its launch. Since then, the tool has helped to include Brazilians who did not use the banking system, but fraud is becoming more and more frequent, explains Thaís Cíntia Cárnio, specialist in Banking and professor of International Economic Relations and Financial Market at Mackenzie University, in an interview The CNN this Sunday (14).

“Pix helped with inclusion, with democratization and, when people feel integrated into the banking system, they have the opportunity to access credit more easily, it is an exercise in citizenship. People were on the sidelines of all of this because they didn’t understand how it worked or couldn’t afford very high rates. They feel much more inserted in the financial market”, he assesses.

She argues that banks are able to detect fraud more easily, if they want to. “I would like to see a more proactive posture by Febraban and financial institutions, because the money transferred by gangs does not evaporate, it goes to another financial institution, which has an obligation to know its client, if he has the financial capacity for the amounts that are circulating in your account. It needs a little more effort to curb this type of criminal action and, based on this search, to break up gangs, and not be restricted from the freedom of use. The problem isn’t with Pix, it’s public safety.”

The teacher exemplifies. “The ‘know your customers’ policy of financial institutions is flawed. They have advanced technology, they make huge profits annually, and this issue of investment in protection should be an increasingly strong touchstone, not just something on paper. Banks have systems that allow them to check whether what is passing through the customer’s account makes sense or not, according to their financial capacity. A person who spends R$3,000 a month, suddenly spends R$30,000, needs to be checked by the financial institution. With a little more will, the banks will be able to apply the security mechanisms”.

Meanwhile, it is up to the citizen to protect himself as he can. “I see that in the future it is possible that we will have even more limitations on full use due to fraud. It’s to avoid bank apps inside the cell phone. It’s sad, but if you don’t have a device that allows you to have secret folders, which are not visible to anyone who eventually steals your cell phone, it helps a lot. And try to make the movements from the devices at home. It interferes with life, but at the moment, with what we have in our hands, it’s the only way to avoid more disastrous situations”, he teaches.
