Pix is ahead in number of transactions per capita in the world, says BC

Absolute success, Pix already exceeds the mark of 100 transactions per capita per year on its second anniversary, which takes place this Wednesday (16), consolidating itself at the forefront in use in the world.

According to a graph presented in a Central Bank newsletter, until October, there were 101 annual transactions per capita, against 49 in Denmark, which already has an instant payment system for five years, and 31 in the United Kingdom, where a similar tool has already been used for 11 years.

“From an international perspective, the use of Pix is also impressive, there are already more than 100 transactions per capita (annual transactions per inhabitants), a mark that some countries that already have instant payments for more than 10 years have not yet reached”, said the BC , in the document.

The agency also points out that, until last month, the service created by the BC had already been responsible for more than 28 billion transactions, which moved about R$ 14 trillion. Since its launch, 130 million people have used Pix, with 64 million having never done a TED before, “which shows how the tool is a vector for financial inclusion”.

According to BC, at the end of 2021, Pix was already the most used electronic payment method in the country and, in 2022, the amount of transactions continues to grow rapidly.

Transfers between people are still the largest share of transactions (67%), but the municipality points out that payments from people to companies are gaining relevance every month (from 5% to 23% of transactions), with the use of the QR Code becoming popularizing each day (from 6% to 19%).

“Pix was born as the Brazilian instant payment, but today, with only 2 years of existence, it is already much more than that. It makes it possible to schedule transactions, pay due bills and withdraw money in cash”, evaluated the Director of Organization of the Financial System and Resolution of the BC, Renato Dias Gomes.

“The competitive environment in which Pix is inserted and the infrastructure provided by the Central Bank as a neutral agent enable an environment of greater efficiency, inclusion and cost reduction, positively impacting users and, ultimately, the Brazilian economy”, he added.

In the document, BC highlights that, at the top of Pix’s evolutionary list, there is a function similar to automatic debit. “This functionality will make it easier to make recurring payments, giving users greater convenience, reducing bad debt and eliminating the need to enter into bilateral agreements, as currently occurs with direct debit, which will provide greater ease and cost reduction for receiving companies. .”

In addition, the agency also highlighted that another possibility in the future is the interconnection with payment systems in other countries. “The BC has been following international discussions and initiatives in this direction.”
